OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently warned that financial institutions may soon face a “significant, impending fraud crisis” driven by artificial intelligence. Speaking at a Federal Reserve conference in mid-2025, he emphasized that traditional safeguards—such as voiceprint authentication—are no longer reliable. AI fraud in banking is escalating, as AI tools can now impersonate individuals with alarming realism, making it easier than ever for fraudsters to bypass standard identity checks.

AI-generated voice clones can now mimic a person’s speech patterns with such precision that they can trick automated systems or even human staff. Adopt Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Wherever possible, institutions should implement MFA that blends:

  • Something you are (biometric, paired with other factors)

For high-value transfers or sensitive changes, require additional approvals such as manager sign-off or customer call-backs.

Employees remain both the first line of defense and a common point of failure. Regular training—using simulated phishing campaigns or mock deepfake calls—helps staff identify red flags. Protocols should empower employees to pause, verify, and escalate suspicious requests, even if they appear to come from senior executives.

Monitor and Detect in Real Time

Modern fraud-prevention platforms can continuously monitor transactions and account activity for anomalies. Systems that automatically validate new payees, detect unusual transfer patterns, and block payments to unverified accounts can act as a backstop if social engineering succeeds.

Audit and Stress-Test Systems

Because AI threats evolve rapidly, security and payment processes must be regularly tested. “Red team” exercises—where internal or external specialists attempt to breach systems—can expose weaknesses before criminals do. Combined with software and detection tool updates, these exercises ensure defenses don’t become stale.

Collaborate Across the Industry

AI-driven fraud is a collective threat. By joining fraud information exchanges and working with regulators and peers, institutions can spot emerging scams earlier and share best practices. If you receive an unexpected call or message—whether from a bank, colleague, or even a family member—treat it with caution, even if the voice sounds familiar. Criminals can now clone voices convincingly. Never act on a single call or voicemail requesting money or personal details. Instead, hang up and confirm through a trusted number or channel, such as the official bank line or a known family contact.

Use Stronger Authentication

Take advantage of security features your financial institutions already provide. Enable two-factor authentication on all accounts, ideally through an authenticator app or hardware key rather than SMS. Set alerts for large transactions or account changes. If your bank still uses voice verification, ask for an alternative method, such as a secondary PIN.

Establish Family or Business Code Words

Simple practices can provide strong protection. Create a private code word known only within your family or business circle. In an emergency or high-stakes request, asking for the code word can quickly expose an impersonator.

Watch for Signs of Manipulation

Deepfake voices and videos are improving, but they are not flawless. Pay attention to odd intonation, unnatural pauses, or background glitches. In video calls, poor lip-sync, strange lighting, or reluctance to turn on a camera should raise suspicion. When in doubt, request an alternate way to confirm the person’s identity.

Limit Your Digital Footprint

Fraudsters often scrape social media and online content to build convincing impersonations. Be mindful about posting voice notes, videos, or personal trivia that could feed AI models. Review your privacy settings and think twice before oversharing.

Artificial intelligence has reshaped the landscape of fraud, making once-reliable safeguards—like voiceprints or simple facial recognition—obsolete. The ability to clone voices, fake video calls, and generate convincing phishing messages has raised the stakes for both institutions and individuals.

Yet this is not a reason for panic. With the right adjustments, risks can be contained. The path forward rests on three essentials:

  • Layered security that combines multiple forms of authentication.
  • Verification habits that confirm requests through trusted, independent channels.
  • Vigilance—the willingness to pause, question, and double-check.
